If you’re a school leaver (or not!) who enjoys problem-solving and is looking for a rewarding career in the local electrical industry, Peebles Electrical have some advice to help you.

At Peebles, we always advise that if the person can, they complete their first level of Electrical Training (Level Two) in a full-time class.

It only takes a few months but reduces night classes from three years to two. This is hugely beneficial because it gets hard working full-time and doing night classes once or twice a week.

Having achieved Level Two also makes a person far more employable. Peebles (along with many other electrical companies) would rarely employ an apprentice without it.

If the person does do it full time, they will only be in study four days a week and will be encouraged to do unpaid work experience with an electrical firm on that day. This will also make the candidate more employable, or they may even be hired by that company . . . Two of our most recent apprentices have started their electrical careers way.

Looking sooner for placement is also encouraged while studying. If a person leaves this until halfway through before he finds someone who'll take him!

Two organisations that deliver this training are Etco and Wintec. Etco is very well set up with good tutors. Wintec also have a Māori/Pasifika programme which may be of consideration for some applicants.
